Sadly, many people struggle to find that same sense of community.

Being socially isolated means you feel more than a little lonely; it means you don’t have meaningful relationships; it means you lack a sense of belonging —and it has a huge impact on a person’s ability to thrive.

• Teens that feel isolated are more likely to take part in risky behaviours like smoking, drinking and taking drugs.
• Isolated newcomers are less likely to effectively participate in their everyday lives.

As our population continues to age, seniors are feeling more and more alone.

• 20% of Canadian seniors say they feel isolated from others.
• 1/3 of Canadians over 65 are at risk of becoming socially isolated.
• A quarter of Canadians over 65 wish they could participate in more social activities.
• Isolated seniors are 50% more likely to develop dementia.

We know people are feeling socially isolated, but the Y is choosing to take action because we believe everyone belongs.

The Y is a "third place." We're a space for newcomers to find support and make friends; we're a place where children gain confidence and build relationships; we're a community for everyone who needs connection.
