YMCA Employment Coach Shines Bright and Saves Lives

“When times were hard, and I couldn’t see the light, she gave me reason to believe.”

Meet Sharon, an employment coach with the YMCA and an important figure in many people's search for employment. She is a beacon of support and guidance at YMCA Employment Services and has helped hundreds of people find a job.

New to Canada and a busy mom, Melissa was lost and unsure of her career path. She began her employment search with the YMCA Employment Services and worked directly with Sharon. 

“I felt understood and heard,” said Melissa. Sharon was so kind and patient, listening to my story and my doubts. She helped shape my resume and cover letter, nudged me out of my comfort zone, and helped me believe in myself and encouraged me to be a risk-taker.”

With Sharon's encouragement, Melissa took a chance on a job opportunity that seemed out of reach. The result? Applying for a job on a Monday and receiving an offer of employment on the Thursday!

Louis also worked with Sharon through the YMCA Employment Services. Arriving in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance from Zambia, and hoping to support himself financially, Louis was searching for a job in the finance sector but was finding it difficult to get hired. 

Sharon helped Louis build a new resume, gave him job search resources, and worked with him on his interview skills. Just over two months later, after a long hiring process, Louis received an employment offer in the finance sector. He says Sharon is the reason he not only landed a job, but a job in a field that he finds interesting and meaningful.
