Building Trust at YMCA Beyond the Bell™
When a new student enrolls in YMCA Beyond the Bell™, our staff take extra care to make sure they feel welcome. Hear from one of our Beyond the Bell™ facilitators about how a simple conversation built trust with an apprehensive student.
A few months, we welcomed a new student to our YMCA Beyond the Bell™ program.
After entering our room for the first time, this 11-year-old boy quickly made himself inconspicuous. Although he would participate in activities, he took every opportunity to distance himself from the group.
During snack he would choose whichever seat was furthest from educators and students. While doing math activities on the computer he would cover his head with the hood of his sweater. His body language screamed “leave me alone!"
One day I was able to engage him in conversation, and he began opening up about his interests. We talked about videogames and television shows; things many 11-year-olds can discuss in great detail.
During our chat I noticed his body language began to change. His face grew brighter and his voice more resounding. He started to laugh and tell jokes and quickly had the other kids splitting their sides in fits of laughter.
That afternoon his personality emerged. We have since come to know him as clever and good-natured, kind and respectful. I am proud that our program has given him a place to open up, and where he positively affects his peers more than he realizes.
It has been a privilege watching him come to life.
