Amino's Story

Meet Amino. She's a newcomer youth and for the past four years she says she’s been coming to the YMCA Newcomer Youth Centre (NYC) every day. Amino first heard about the YMCA four years ago. That’s when she discovered the NYC, and she hasn’t stopped coming since.

“The Newcomer Youth Centre really helped me when I was in Grade 9. I needed a job, and I asked my ESL teacher for help. She connected me with a staff member at the YMCA who helped me create my first resume,” says Amino.  

“It was an amazing experience and made me feel great. The resume has helped me get interviews and given me the courage to keep looking for a job,” she says.

Amino would eventually land herself a job. This summer, thanks to support from the Youth Labour Market Program, she’ll be working with YMCA Day Camps.

Through the NYC, Amino also participated in the YMCA Homework Club, a partnership with local non-profit Student Open Circles, with services that include matching volunteer student tutors from McMaster University with youth needing extra support in subjects including English, math, and science.

From needing help to offering it, Amino has gained valuable leadership experience as a volunteer and mentor at NYC. She says those experiences have helped her grow and have connected her more deeply with the community

“I love to come to the NYC. Even though I am graduating this year, I will continue to give 110% to the YMCA,” she says.  

Amino's story is an example of how the YMCA ignites potential in everyone. Amino was able to find the support and guidance she needed as a newcomer, giving her the support she needed to thrive.  

The YMCA Newcomer Youth Centres are a place for learning, growth and socialization. When young newcomers come to one of our centres, they have access too educational opportunities, career assistance, information on important settlement issues such as transportation, health, housing, volunteering, and relationships, a place to hang out with new or old friends and a space to listen to music, play games, read, watch movies & TV, and more.
