Hamilton|Burlington|Brantford YMCA Announces Scholarship Recipients for Youth Peace and Development

Hamilton, Ontario - The YMCA of Hamilton | Burlington | Brantford has proudly announced the 2024 recipients of the Farah Family Youth Peace Scholarship and the Christopher Cutler Youth Development Scholarship.

Their inspiring work and achievements underpins the YMCA’s focus on igniting potential through the support of young people in the communities they serve, and creating vibrant and healthy communities,” said Manny Figueiredo, President & CEO of YMCA Hamilton|Burlington|Brantford.   

The Christopher Cutler Youth Development Scholarship of $1000 each has been awarded to two remarkable students from Bishop Ryan Secondary School in Hamilton, to support their education and career development: 

• Ademide Abogenin, recognized for her academic achievements and leadership in creating a warm, welcoming, and inclusive school environment. 
• Keira Savin, honored for her exceptional academic performance and her leadership and volunteerism, both within the school and the broader community, embodying the principles of youth leadership. 

Both students have demonstrated outstanding leadership and efforts to promote diversity, inclusion, and tolerance within their school community. 

The Farah Family Youth Peace Scholarship has been granted to support eight community-based school projects across Hamilton, Burlington and Brantford in 2024 that aim to encourage peace, cross-cultural understanding, and civic engagement: 

1. St. John’s College, Brantford - Community Outreach project to assist Riverview Terrace Retirement Facility and expand its impact to include organizations like St. Andrews Soup for the Soul and Nova Vita. 
2. North Park Collegiate, Brantford - “North Park Welcomes the World” event, which will be enhanced to include guest speakers, musical entertainment, and a fashion show. 
3. Pauline Johnson Collegiate Vocational School - Cultural Appreciation Day to celebrate the diverse cultures within the community. 
4. Pauline Johnson Collegiate Vocational School - Tastes of Culture event to honor all ethnicities and their contributions. 
5. Burlington Central High School - BCHS Student Well-Being initiative to promote personal and community well-being through activities and workshops. 
6. Annunciation of our Christ, Hamilton - Efforts to become the first Catholic Language Friendly School in North America. 
7. Westdale Secondary School, Hamilton - Newcomers Breaking Bread Activity Day to foster camaraderie and connections among students. 
8. Glendale Secondary School, Hamilton - School and Community Fair, including an Iftar event planned by the Muslim Student Association during Ramadan.
