Support from the Y during incarceration is helping this man rebuild his life.

John* was looking to better himself personally and professionally during his time in an Ontario Correctional Institute.

Thanks to a partnership with the YMCA, John was able to take part in a program to improve his chances of getting a job. He says he’s updated his writing and math skills, has learned basic plumbing concepts, and did training that focuses on soft skills like attitude and time management.

My Learning Coach has been helpful in teaching me math and offered me so much support. I’ve received a ton of encouragement and felt very welcome,” says John.

With help from that incredible YMCA Coach, John built a resume that helped him land a job just eight weeks after his release. He’s currently working as a general labourer in the construction industry.

Thanks to the Y, John also has hope for the future. He says he’s focused on supporting his family and rebuilding his life. Living north of Parry Sound, the job opportunities are limited, and John believes his updated skills, resume and confidence are the reason he was able to get an entry-level position that he hopes will become a long-term secure job and possible apprenticeship.

“When I doubted myself, my Learning Coach gave me hope and confidence. I am very thankful for this program.”

When we find ourselves in a dark time, the YMCA is there to help us rediscover the light.

Changing lives saves lives, and the Y saves lives everyday by igniting the potential in people to shine! #ShineOn #YSavesLives
