Girls laughing
Polar bear dips, flag raising, Kangaroo Kourt, fried granola, bell ringing, cheering, campfires (We LOVE campfires!), tetherball, out-trips, laughter and friends - these are just some of the highlights that give Wanakita Overnight Camp it's beloved reputation.
YMCA Wanakita offers a variety of excellent summer overnight camp programs for ages 7 - 16. We offer a balance of age-appropriate individual and group camp activities which provides an opportunity for each camper to participate to their full potential. At YMCA Wanakita, both technical and social skills are fostered, providing a safe place for campers to take risks and grow. This creates a formula for success that will stay with campers well beyond their time at camp.

One Week Program

Kita Camp

Ages: 7 - 12

The Kita program is YMCA Wanakita’s one-week camp program providing a unique and supportive atmosphere with experienced counsellors chosen specifically to create a fun, inclusive and welcoming environment. Kitas participate in Personal Choice Activities (PCA), enjoy the energy and sharing of meals in the Core Dining Hall with all campers, and experience a traditional one night Wanakita out-trip.

Two Week Programs

Junior and Intermediate (JI)

Ages: 7 - 12

Junior and Intermediate campers (JI) enjoy the best that Wanakita has to offer. JIs participate in a variety of activities that are fun, engaging, and instructive. Every morning campers participate in Personal Choice Activities (PCA), selected at registration, wherein campers receive instruction in various traditional camp activities from archery to sailing. Campers also get a chance to  challenge themselves on an out-trip tailored to their level of experience, exploring Koshlong Lake.

Juniors will have a one night introduction to out-tripping while Intermediates will be out for two nights, learning and developing a number of outdoor skills. Our JI’s also participate in Theme Days, friendly camp-wide games, during each session.

Senior Campers

Ages: 13 - 15

We offer three opportunities for our Senior campers to participate in our Summer Overnight Camp. Programs are two weeks long.

Senior Traditional

With nine days at camp and five days on trip, “Trad” campers get the best of both worlds while enjoying the full extent of YMCA Wanakita’s diverse programming. The five-day canoe trip in the Canadian wilderness provides each cabin group a meaningful challenge to work toward. We believe that the sense of purpose and adventure fostered in this program will help any camper gain self-confidence and build lasting friendships. The Senior Traditional Program has remained one of our most successful programs for over 60 years.

Senior Specialty

Senior Specialty campers spend two weeks at YMCA Wanakita refining skills and strengthening friendships. These campers also participate in a three-day out-trip on Koshlong Lake to allow them to hone their skills and bond in a unique manner. Spending the full two weeks at camp allows Senior Specialty campers to pursue more time-intensive skills such as paddle-making and advanced wilderness skills.

Senior Tripper

No prior canoe tripping experience is necessary in this specialty program, only a sense of adventure and discovery. Campers begin with two days of packing, preparation, and fun at camp, and then off for an incredible ten days of adventure, exploration and canoeing in Killarney and Algonquin Provincial Parks. Trippers will learn about outdoor living skills, canoeing skills and much more. The final two days are spent at camp debriefing the experience, while participating in a number of YMCA Wanakita’s closing traditions. Campers will be supported by staff uniquely suited to the tripping experience.

2016 Trips:

  • Session A - Killarney
  • Session B - Algonquin
  • Session C - Killarney
  • Session D - Algonquin

Leadership Development

Student Counsellor (SC) Program

Ages: 15+

YMCA Wanakita is committed to seeing its campers grow into strong and committed leaders. Our Student Counsellor (SC) program provides two years of quality leadership development. Potential participants must be motivated, mature, and have a desire to learn. First and Second Year SCs will receive a quality Salus Personal Floatation Device (PFD) with the new YMCA Wanakita logo which can be worn for years to come.

First Year SC

Age: 15 (by December 31, 2016)

First Year SCs focus on technical skill development, with an introduction to group leadership skills. They will face the skill-building challenges of a six day canoe trip, and earn nationally recognized certifications in lifesaving, first aid, and canoeing. Participants also refine their skills in YMCA Wanakita’s other activity areas such as archery, sailing, kayaking, and outdoor living skills. Group cooperation, self-discipline and personal initiative are keys to a successful and fulfilling experience.

Second Year

Age: 16 (by December 31, 2016)

Second Year SCs focus on camp and community leadership skills, group dynamics, understanding the counselling role, community service, teaching skills, camp philosophy and program objectives. Emphasis will be placed on learning camper needs and development, through periodic placements in camper cabins. Participants should have some background in camping skills before considering participating in this program.
